The vision for Briarcliffe Acres came to life as a retirement community, envisioned by Kenneth Ellsworth, a native of Briarcliff Manor, New York, from which he derived the name for his project. Kenneth Ellsworth married Virginia (Ginny) Gasque, whose family hailed from the nearby town of Conway, South Carolina. Notably, Briarcliffe Acres stands as one of the earliest planned communities in the Southeast.

In the early parts of the 20th century, the coastal regions of northernmost South Carolina were primarily used for farming, with cotton and tobacco thriving due to the sea breezes enriching the sandy soil. Over time, farmers from towns like Loris, Galivants Ferry, and Florence purchased land in the area for practical reasons, spending summers with their families there to escape the heat and sand fleas of their main farms. The development of Briarcliffe Acres added a touch of sophistication to the region’s growth.
